A partial rewire is the replacement or upgrade of a small area of a homes wiring.
A partial rewire is often recommended when damage or wear and tear has caused electrical issues or safety concerns in one section of your homes electrical system. Thames Valley Electrician are based in Bracknell and are your local, specialist rewire electrician. If your Bracknell home needs a partial rewire, we have the skills and experience to help.
What is a partial rewire?
A partial rewire involves much of the same work as a full rewire but is restricted to one area of your Bracknell home. Your electrical installation will be fully upgraded in the area in which the rewire occurs. Old circuitry and hardware will be removed, and new cabling and fittings will be installed. Your walls will need to be chased out and floorboards will need to be lifted. As the rewire is in one area of your home, the disruption from these works will be minimised. However, you should still expect dust, noise and possible interruptions of power. An experienced rewire electrician will be well organised and will complete your partial rewire safely, tidily and within a pre agreed timescale.
Why would I need a partial rewire?
There are a several reasons why your Bracknell homes electrical installation may need a partial rewire. Partial rewires normally occur when one room or floor has been subjected to damage, been degraded due to exposure to sub-optimal conditions or had poorly performed modifications carried out.
If your wiring has suffered any of the following, a partial rewire will be recommended:
- Exposure to damp – Water and electricity do not mix and a damp room or wall can cause significant damage to your electrics. Metal fittings will rust, cables may be compromised and the copper wiring within will begin to oxidise. If your electrics have been subject to damp conditions through water leakage, or failure of the damp course, a partial rewire may be required.
- Excessive power demand or overload – Overloaded cabling can become hot as it struggles to cope with the demands placed upon it. The PVC will become brittle and the risk of electrical fire or shock increases. Overload can be caused by the heavy power demands of modern electronics on outdated electrical wiring. It can also be caused when the wrong hardware has been installed, usually when an unqualified person has adapted the electrics.
- Connections that are loose – Loose connections put you at high risk of fire or electrical shock as the internal wiring becomes exposed. A qualified electrician will need to put this right to keep you safe. A partial rewire will be needed if this is evident throughout a room’s installation.
- Age of wiring – As with all things, electrical wiring degrades with time and use. After around 25 years wiring will need to be replaced. If your home has areas that were wired at different times, perhaps due to an extension, you may need a partial rewire to ensure all areas meet safety standards.
- Fire damage – If you have unfortunately suffered a fire in one area of your house, the wiring there will need replacing.
- Vermin issues – Cabling that has been chewed by either mice, rats or squirrels will be dangerous. This is often an issue in lofts and basements. A partial rewire, after the exterminator has given you all clear, will be needed.
